In Australia, the organisation that sets and maintains the levels of translator and interpreter accreditation is known as NAATI.  We use NAATI certified translators or NAATI certified interpreters when requested.   NAATI accreditation is the official credential for accreditation in Australia.  Many organisation such as courts require certified interpreters or certified translators.  Many documents that are used for government use also need to be certified. 

Certified translators and certified interpreters are generally more expensive than other interpreters or translators.  It is advisable to understand the purpose of the translated document and then make a determination of appropriateness of the use of a certified translator or interpreter.
